Being sustainable as a small business.
In this day and age sustainability is a word that gets thrown about a lot. Environmental issues are at the top of debate and political agenda and after the past year, it’s now more vital than ever for everyone to do their bit for the planet. The issue for many however, is cost. As a small company we are always looking for ways to save money but unfortunately, that usually means the less sustainable option, it is very rare for the most eco friendly option to also be the most economically friendly choice. Despite the last year being so difficult for so many, we found ourselves having a record breaking year. Turns out chocolate really is an essential good in times of crisis. This boost of sales over the last year has meant that for the first time in a long time we were able to look at what we do and consider how we can do that in a more sustainable way. As a chocolate manufacture, it’s sometimes difficult to find options for packaging that are both food safe, eco friendly and affordable yet our use of plastic has always been something we’ve wanted to change.
This year we have taken the plunge to try to do our bit for the planet. Our slabs and most of our other products that you know and love have always been packed in a plastic clear bag, and although this is recyclable - most local recycling won’t take it. This Earth day we have launched a new slab that is not just a new flavour for us, but in new packaging too! We have found compostable bags that look the exact same as our old plastic bags, but you can stick them in your compost at home to reduce waste. To put into these new compostable bags we have made a range of Coffee flavoured slabs. They are a Rice Milk Coffee Slab in large and mini sizes and a Dark Chocolate Slab in both sizes too.
As we are also passionate about reducing waste, now we have new bags for our new coffee slabs we don’t want to throw away all our existing bags. So as not to be wasteful ourselves we will be finishing off the old plastic packing with our existing slabs and move them to the new compostable bags when we finish them.
